My yoga practice started 8 years ago- invited by a good friend to attend a yoga class, I wasn't sure what I had signed up for, but was super excited after my first hour in practice and I was "all in". The classes I attended really encompassed the full philosophy of yoga, and that resonated with me.
In the summer of 2015, I took a deep dive into studying yoga. Colleen Yee and Rolf Gates were my inspiration and I started learning more about all 8 limbs of this ancient, beautiful, time tested practice. In the winter of 2016, Andrea Parks, a long time friend, and someone I consider family and an inspiration, asked me if I would like to do a 200 YTT. The timing was perfect, and with the noted enthusiasm on my part, my family and friends gave me the support I needed to start my training. I graduated as a Cloud Nine Yoga Teacher in July of 2016 under the careful instruction of both Andrea Parks and Erin McGuire. I also had the most amazing benefit of being mentored by both Sarah Cram Driscoll and Maria Dummermuth during my time in training. Cloud Nine Yoga is new to Iowa and based out of California with studios located in the western United State and Hawaii. Erika Faith is the founder and she is an amazing soul!
I teach a variety of classes at 3 different studios in Cedar Rapids and Mount Vernon- Breathing Room Yoga, Toula Yoga and Rolling Hills Yoga. My classes are Hatha yoga based, and include Hatha Flow, Beginner's Yoga, Yoga and Mindfulness, Restorative Yoga, and Yin Yoga.
I most recently, started my own business called "Many Masters Yoga". An avid photographer (nature and yogis) , Boho yoga jewelry designer, and yoga instructor, it has been a super fun start up business!
On a more personal note, I am the very proud mother of 2 amazing and creative children- Julian and Grace. We are a close knit group of 3 that love to create, cook, travel, and just hang together.
Heather stumbled into a yoga class one fateful Saturday morning after wandering the streets of Boston and wondering how to fill the void left by her disillusionment with conservatory life. After finishing her first class ever, she knew she wanted to teach and so began her journey deep into the world of Ashtanga, Yin, and Restorative Yoga, Insight (aka mindfulness) meditation, and massage therapy. Six years of practice, study, and reignited passion through physical expansion and injury, joy and heartbreak, knowledge and curiosity eventually brought her home to her native Iowa to roost.
Once settled, she immediately began building her massage clientele and shortly thereafter began teaching Yin Yoga and meditation. It took two years home before she could no longer resist the call of music in her heart and in January of 2016 joined Chorale Midwest. Now she keeps herself busy trying to find a balance for all of her passions:massage, Reiki, and cupping therapy, teaching Yin Yoga, and singing. She is looking forward to getting back to offering Restorative Yoga and meditation here at Breathing Room Yoga.
When you come to one of Heather's classes you can expect some specific elements: All levels, all the time. Heather believes yoga is for EVERY BODY. Age, size, injury, limited flexibility and/or strength are regarded as useful information rather than hindrances to a practice. She tailors her classes specifically to help students find their inner compass of wisdom. Not every student in her class does the same pose at the same time. The safety and wisdom of each individual's body is paramount. Breath and wise attention are ALWAYS more important than what a person does or how they look when they do it. I cannot WAIT to meet you on the mat!!!
